I am a third-generation Californian by birth, and a Nevadan by choice. In 2021, my wife of 45 years and I moved to Reno to prepare for a retirement filled with hiking and adventure. In 2023, I retired and, the following week, I started a personal pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela to contemplate what might follow a 40-year legal career. I sought to discover my ikigai, the Japanese term for life's purpose. Ikigai involves social engagement and doing what inspires one to take actions that benefit both oneself and one's community. Through miles of personal reflection and conversations with other pilgrims on the Camino, I concluded that community service is my ikigai. In 2024, at age 70, I enrolled in a three-year Master of Social Work program at the University of Nevada, Reno to prepare for the next chapter. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn.
